Paper Boats is a sweet and understated family drama that incorporates loss as well as rejoining family that were thought gone.
With the threat of her deportation from the US a single mother (Alexandra Melkman) sends her 3 children (these are her actual children as well) to live with their grandfather Don Jorge (Pedro Damián) back in her native Mexico. The grumpy old man’s existence is shattered by the introduction of his never-before met grandkids but all of their lives are enriched from this experience. Eventually!
With some amazing locations and great camerawork it really feels like an authentic but isolated way of living, so different to the life the kids had before.
This heartfelt and extremely family oriented (it seems the entire production were relations – how could this film be anything but!) this is a wonderful slice of life and a look at the way families can be complex and distant but still, above everything else, be family.
