Devil’s Pass

Devil’s Pass is a found footage style documentary investigating the Dyatlov Pass Incident where nine experienced hikers were found high up in the Ural Mountains, outside their tents and not wearing the appropriate gear and in some cases they looked like they didn’t have the time to get their gear on. They all died within metres of their still standing tents.

Director Renny Harlin has done a decent job of the film, although it is leaning more so towards being an investigative film than a horror one. It does do a few things well like building up the relationships between the crew members but in the end it fails to provide tension or fear. The mystery and investigation takes some interesting turns and is fairly well done but Devil’s Pass ends up being a nice documentary effort with some tragedy attached. The original mystery surrounding the Dyatlov Pass Incident turns out to be far more interesting than this film.

The creature design is a little bit poor and the CGI hasn’t aged terribly well. When it comes down to the reveal too much is shown and not enough is made of these creatures abilities to increase the atmosphere and terror levels when it easily could have.

Horror Rating:     ½
